Yesterday we mentioned the personal name of the God of the Bible…a strange sounding Hebrew word/name, Yahweh.  It is actually derived from the first person Hebrew verb translate “to be.”  Translated into English, Yahweh means “I am.”  Sounds familiar to some of you, right?  When Moses asked God, Who was speaking from a burning bush, what His name was, He replied, ” ‘I am’…tell My people that ‘I am’ sent you to deliver them from Egypt.” (Exodus 3:13-14)  The primary significance of God’s name, “I am,” is that He is the “Eternal One.”  Our God is eternal…without beginning or end…and He is the only Person in existence who is eternal.  His existence is forever!  Therefore, He is the one, and only, God…Yahweh…the Great I Am! Worship Him…and Him alone.  By the way, Jesus claimed to be the “I Am.”

Isaiah 45:5

“I am Yahweh, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God.”

John 8:58

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

“Every time we hear the word Yahweh, or every time you see LORD (all caps) in the English Bible, you should think: this is a proper name (like Peter or John) built out of the word for “I am” and reminding us each time that God absolutely is.” ~ John Piper
