Many people have what are called “birth marks.” It could be a mole or a rather unique skin configuration…sometimes, unique enough that they can be used for the purpose of making a positive identification of the person. Jesus Christ has identification marks, but they were not His from birth. They are His, instead, from death…”death marks,” if you will. The Bible records that the body of the resurrected, glorified Jesus retained them, and will have them for eternity. He will always be known by the scars. Those scars will forever remind us of His great love for us, and the price that was paid for our salvation.

John 20:24-28

24 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.” 26 A week later [Jesus’] disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

“The marks of death that God chose never to erase

The wounds of love’s eternal war.

When the kingdom comes with its perfected sons

He (Jesus) will be known by the scars.” ~ Michael Card
