In Scripture we have been repeatedly commanded to love others. No one is exempted from receiving our love…not even those who are considered “enemies” (Matthew 5:44). Now…there’s a question that goes with that: What is the standard of our love for others? The standard is Jesus. We are to love as Jesus has loved us.

John 13:34-35

[Jesus said,] 34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 15:12

[Jesus said,] “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.”

“It is not exceptionally worthy people that Jesus loves, but His love is exceptional in that He loves those of no value at all. In fact, He loves us in our sin. Only such a view of love correctly appreciates the sacrifice of Christ and respects the infinite chasm between what is deserved and mercy.” ~ Jim Elliff
