When people hear the word “meek,” they usually equate it with someone who is weak, someone who resembles the old cartoon character, Caspar Milquetoast…described as one who, “speaks softly and gets hit with a big stick!”  Actually, meekness could more accurately be represented by one of those gigantic Belgian Draft horses, a powerful animal that stands 6 feet tall and weighs in at 2000 pounds.  That horse could easily crush a person.  However, the Belgian is normally thought of as gentle and meek…meek, as in “great power…under control.”  Meekness is in no way weakness.  It is, in fact, a quality that the Lord Jesus displayed, and desires His followers to display as well.

Zephaniah 3:12

The LORD declares, “But I will leave among you those who are meek and humble, who trust in the name of the LORD.”

Matthew 5:5

Jesus said, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Matthew 11:29

Jesus said, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.

“Meekness is not to be confused with weakness: the meek are not simply submissive because they lack the resources to be anything else. Meekness is quite compatible with great strength and ability as humans measure strength, but whatever strength or weakness the meek person has is accompanied by humility and a genuine dependence on God. True meekness may be a quality of the strong, those who could assert themselves but choose not to do so.” ~ Dr. Leon Morris
