Are you an idol worshipper?  Most professing Christians, who read that question, would respond, “Absolutely not!”  That’s because we immediately think of literally bowing in worship before some kind of physical object made of stone or wood, treating it as a “god.”  Idolatry, however, is not limited to that.  In reality, an idol is anything that you love…that you devote yourself to…more than God…what God, through the prophet, Ezekiel, called “idols of the heart.”  Christians aren’t exempt from this idolatry.  They can subtly creep into our lives anytime…anywhere…and they will hinder God’s work in our lives!  So, we must be vigilant!  We must be on guard!

Exodus 20:3, 5

“You shall have no other gods before Me…You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God.”

1 John 5:20-21

20 And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols.

“[An idol] is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give.  An idol is whatever you look at and say, in your heart of hearts, “If I have that, then I’ll feel my life has meaning, then I’ll know I have value, then I’ll feel significant and secure.” ~ Tim Keller

“If revival is being withheld from us it is because some idol remains still enthroned.” ~ Jonathan Goforth
